Answers to common questions about business energy
Business energy contracts typically have different pricing structures, contract terms, and billing arrangements. Businesses benefit from lower unit rates, flexible contract lengths, dedicated account management, and consolidated billing for multiple sites. Business energy is also subject to 5% VAT (for qualifying businesses) compared to 20% for domestic energy.
The business energy switching process typically takes 4-6 weeks. This includes a 14-day cooling-off period, transfer of supply details between suppliers, and meter registration. The actual switch date is coordinated to ensure no interruption to your energy supply.
You can switch business energy suppliers up to 120 days before your current contract ends without incurring exit fees. If you try to switch earlier, you may be subject to termination charges. We recommend checking your contract end date and starting the comparison process 3-4 months before this date.
The standing charge is a fixed daily amount that covers the cost of maintaining your energy supply, including meter readings and network maintenance. The unit rate is the price you pay for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy you use. Your total bill is calculated as: (standing charge × days) + (unit rate × kWh used).
Half-hourly (HH) meters automatically send your energy usage data to your supplier every 30 minutes. Businesses with a maximum demand of 100kW or more are required to have HH metering. They provide detailed consumption data that can help identify energy-saving opportunities and ensure accurate billing.
