Answers to common questions about domestic energy
The average household can save around £290 per year by switching from a standard variable tariff to a competitive fixed deal. Savings depend on your current tariff, usage, and location. Use our energy calculator above to get a personalized estimate.
Switching energy suppliers typically takes 21 days from the date you agree to switch. There's a 14-day cooling-off period, and your supply won't be interrupted during the switch. The whole process is managed by the new supplier.
If you're on a fixed tariff, you may have to pay exit fees if you switch before the end of your contract. However, you can switch up to 49 days before your contract ends without paying exit fees. Standard variable tariffs don't have exit fees.
The Energy Price Cap is set by Ofgem and limits the amount suppliers can charge for each unit of energy and the standing charge on default tariffs. It's reviewed every three months and protects customers who haven't switched to a fixed deal.
Contact your supplier immediately. They must help you with payment plans, provide advice on energy efficiency, and may be able to offer additional support. You may also be eligible for government support schemes like the Warm Home Discount.
